Summary
The position is responsible for implementing prevention strategies in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles, building and sustaining a local coalition, and working closely with both housed and unhoused residents to reduce substance-related harms through policy and environmental change. This role involves targeted outreach, policy advocacy, and collaboration with community stakeholders to improve public health outcomes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Conduct local assessments to document community needs.
2. Facilitate and implement policy campaign activities aligned with program goals.
3. Identify and engage key decision-makers, community stakeholders, and leaders to build support for prevention initiatives.
4. Collaborate with the Project Director and Evaluation team to collect and organize documentation for program evaluation.
5. Maintain detailed records of program activities and submit timely monthly reports with supporting documentation.
6. Develop and distribute educational materials on the risks of substance use and related health issues.
7. Deliver prevention presentations on alcohol, other drugs, and overdose prevention.
8. Coordinate and facilitate delivery of evidence-based curricula focused on healthy decision-making and life skills for youth and young adults.
9. Lead group meetings or community discussions to advance work plan objectives.
10. Participate in Coalition meetings to support the implementation of program strategies.
11. Assist in collecting and analyzing data to evaluate outcomes, monitor trends, and guide program improvement.
12. Work independently with minimal supervision, maintaining a strong focus on meeting deadlines and workplan deliverables.
13. Perform additional duties or special projects as needed to support organizational and programmatic objectives.
Education and Experience
1. A bachelor's degree in public health, public policy, social sciences, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
2. A minimum of one year of experience supporting substance use prevention efforts through community outreach, public education, and strategies that advance systems or policy change.
3. Experience working with diverse populations and building community partnerships is preferred.
Language and Communication Skills
1. Fluency in English is required; bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English preferred.
2. Must be able to speak effectively before key stakeholders, public gatherings, and government.
3. Proficiency Microsoft Office required.
Other Requirements
1. A valid government-issued photo ID.
2. If employee uses his/her personal vehicle to commute to work and/or parks on Agency property, a current California driver’s license is required.
a. If employee has an out-of-state driver’s license, he/she must attain a valid California license no later than 10 days from employment start date.
b. Must maintain current liability insurance coverage on personal vehicle.
c. On occasion, the employee may use their personal vehicle to attend meetings, trainings, events, or conferences. Mileage will be reimbursed at the standard applicable rate.
